Tuesday’s lesson: go with the flow! What should have been a trip taking us around the world turned into 15 hours sitting in North Carolina’s airports. Thankfully, we’re a good natured group and took the maintenance wait and eventual canceled flight in stride. By not flying to Washington DC as early as we were supposed to, we missed our big flight to Ethiopia, so we are trying again today. Apparently, there is an 11 a.m. flight every day connecting our nation’s capital, which I’ve been told has the largest concentration of Ethiopians outside of Ethiopia, to Ethiopia’s capital city of Addis Ababa.
We made some dear African friends, even though we didn’t leave our home state. Two others at the Raleigh airport were also flying to DC to catch the Ethiopia flight: Hanna, a native of Ethiopia who is flying home to see her mother, and Gift, who is flying home to Malawi after finishing a degree at UNC Chapel Hill. During our long layover, we got to know them and hear about their home continent – which increases our excitement about where we’re headed!
